Very recently, major price drops and device updates were announced for Amazon’s Kindle and Barnes & Noble’s Nook, further increasing competition between these e-reader devices and the iPad. Because of these new revelations, the absence of connectivity fees (whereas the iPad still costs to connect), and the fact that they are made specifically for book-enjoying purposes, these e-reader specific devices are beginning to look more attractive to avid readers. On the flip side though, the iPad does allow its users to do a wide range of things that e-reader devices do not. While it certainly depends on how one intends to use the device and how much they actually take advantage of reading capabilities, the changes in this market beg the question of how consumer trends might change: will it make sense to invest in these other devices, even if you have an iPad or iPhone? Will people begin making a switch from Apple products to e-readers? Will apps continue to suffice — or not?

Have you ever seen a dish pass by and think, “I want that!”, or wanted to know where you could find that delicious looking sandwich? Foodspotting draws on the human tendency to initially desire something based on its appearance, and enables you to essentially pick your food based on its picture. The app presents you with photographs of dishes at nearby restaurants creating a different way to choose what and where to eat, similar to windowshopping before buying clothes. In the food-seeking process, Foodspotting enables users to see what options are around you, find what you’re craving, look up specific restaurants, and access guides from renowned shows (e.g. Anthony Bourdain’s No Reservations) to pinpoint any special spots in the vicinity. Furthermore, the app enables people to take pictures of their favorite foods and share them through the app on Facebook, Twitter and Foursquare, tell others where to find the best fare, and complete scavenger hunts, guides, and earn badges and points for contributions to the app. Foodspotting enables a crucial dialogue to occur in the discovery of fine food, and also encourages people to share their experiences, whether or not they know each other. Foodspotting allows foodies to have the taste journey they crave.

It follows general etiquette that eavesdropping is rude so we shouldn’t engage in it. However, it is only natural for humans to be curious about what others think and what sorts of topics are grabbing peoples’ attention. Overheard is an app that basically denounces a polite respect for personal space and encourages people to feed these curiosities. It allows users to see what conversations are occurring on various social networks (i.e. others’ Twitter feeds and Facebook posts), so as to gain a “visual geo representation of noise and chatter,” either for their immediate location or on a larger scope, such as the entire world. Overheard lets people see the thoughts of those they do and do not know and contribute to or passively enjoy others’ thoughts as they wish.
While I see how this app could be intriguing and could present new insights and commentary on our interactions and actions in society, I feel that it takes social networking too far. It is enough that we are constantly bombarded by feeds of various kinds and excessive details about what our friends are or are not doing; I personally do not think it is necessary to input others’ details into the equation. I am definitely a curious person by nature, but that does not mean I need to know everything everyone else is thinking in order to have a grasp of what is going on in my life. However, this opinion is strictly mine — what is your take on Overheard?

While I mentioned Apple’s big plans for devices yesterday, there is some equally big news for software. Steve Jobs announced the improvements that will be made for iTunes 10, most notably of which will be the addition of Ping, a social network based on music. Ping will just be a part of iTunes that users can choose to use or not use, and will enable people not only to see what activities their friends are engaging in on iTunes, but also see how their favorite celebs use iTunes. Anyone who is represented on iTunes, be it by movies, music, or podcasts, will be available to follow, and will enable users to become part of their “inner circle.” There will be a constant flow of live updates, comment capabilities, and tools that enable people to share every part of the entertainment experience, including finding concert tickets and seeing who else will be in attendance. In short, Ping will provide an incredible aid for music discovery, entertainment news, and most importantly a new element to the social networking sphere.
Since Ping will also automatically be incorporated into the iTunes on your iPod or iPhone, it will be accessible from anywhere at any time. However, this accessbility and the mobile platform also beg the question of whether or not there will be an app element to Ping. Since apps are such a huge part of iTunes, it’s possible that Ping will also include a way for people to see what apps their friends are using and what opinions they may have. This would make finding new and cool apps a much easier and more fun process, would strengthen the power of word of mouth, and would encourage a much needed dialogue in the app world.
Even though many people are skeptical about if yet another social network is what we need, I look forward to seeing how Ping will revolutionize music and entertainment trends, and what it will contribute to the mobile sphere.

As I alluded to in an earlier post, Apple just held a music-themed press conference about the new gadgets they plan to release. Here are some of the most notable points:
iPods are getting a facelift. There will be the new iPod Shuffle, a stamp-sized device that holds 15 hours of music and has voice-over playlists. The iPod Nano will be revamped with a completely touch screen, and will incporate iOS — but there has been no mention of app capabilities. Finally, the iPod Touch will be thinner and will feature a retina display and front and rear cameras to enable FaceTime and HD Video recording. Basically, this makes the iPod Touch an iPhone without the actual phone part — it will be interesting to see if this jumpstarts a trend of WiFi, VoIP calling instead of phone plans!
Apple TV was officially introduced (see the earlier post for what it will include), as it will be released later this month. However, Jobs failed to mention anything about apps or FaceTime, so we can only assume that these are features to come.
So even though a lot of talk about features for these devices is only speculation, we can still fantasize about what is to come. What do you hope to see from Apple in the future?

While games can certainly have the effect of creating reclusive individuals, OpenFeint has enabled a more social experience in many iphone and ipod games. This social gaming service has connected users to game-wide leaderboards, discussion boards, and competition platforms, and just announced today some additional features to come. OpenFeint will be adding PlayTime to its repertoire, enabling multiplayer features and voice-chat functions.
Not only is this big news for gamers, as it will enable games to be released a la Xbox Live, but it is also exciting for developers as well. Now you don’t have to be a top tier developer to create multiplayer functionality; PlayTime will enable Casual as well as Hardcore games to enable a switch from single player to multiplayer based on highscore competition, meaning that a developer only needs to have highscores in their game to be able to take advantage of PlayTime.
Watch for these cool additions to the app world as the OpenFeint 3.0 with PlayTime releases later this year. It is sure to change the realm of mobile gaming and introduce a completely new social experience.

The hottest tech topics have been circulating around Apple’s latest addition: the Apple HD TV. Essentially, it is a $99 box that you connect to your TV, and it will effectively replace the need for cable television. By operating via internet, it will allow you to access cheap movies and TV shows on demand (rumored to start at $0.99 a pop), and even connect you to radio stations and music selections, the internet, podcasts, and your photo library (the idea is, if it’s on iTunes, it’s on your TV). The best part is, all of this will be sans commercials, and will ensure your entertainment is what you want it to be.
However, the features certainly won’t stop there. There is talk of FaceTime incorporation so that you can have video conferences with other users, and there are rumors about being able to access apps through Apple TV. This not only presents a new domain for developers to tackle, but also introduces intriguing thoughts of being able to use your iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch as a remote control and nintendo-esque game joystick.
Should this buzz be true, what do you expect to see from the Apple TV? What other things could it be used for, and what trends will emerge from developers? Will this change the way we watch TV? We’d love to hear your thoughts and opions; Apple will be hosting a press conference later today, in which they will hopefully unveil Apple TV specifics, so it will be interesting to see how speculations match up to the specific plans.

For the final eco app, I thought I’d spotlight something that encourages possibly the oldest trick in the book when it comes to being ecologically efficient. As is implied by the name, Carsharing enables just that: sharing rides, better known as carpooling. Since it follows obvious logic that fewer cars on the road = less gas emissions and more money in the pocket, Carsharing enables people to identify other travelers or drivers in their area in order to share rides and reduce the number of vehicles in use.
GPS features are enabled, so users of the app only need to specify their departure time and destination. This information is then automatically posted on the map so that potential car sharers can see if their routes match up. When everything is in sync, users can contact each other either by phone or through ECOTAXI’s internal messaging service. While this may seem a sketchier way to arrange carpools, it certainly does achieve the app’s three main goals: reducing the cost of a journey by sharing it with others, combating carbon warming, and meeting new (and likely interesting) people. Granted, Carsharing may be for the more adventurous iPhone users, but it definitely allows you to get a lot more for your mileage — including a better environmental conscience, some money saved, and potentially great connections.

The world is a vast place, and no history, geography, encyclopedia, or photography book can hope to encapsulate all of its wonders in one succinct place. Fortunately for visual learners, curious minds, and appreciators of aesthetics, there is an app that, in imagery and content, captures a majority if the majestic places and wonders that make our Earth so special. That app is called Fotopedia Heritage.
By looking on a map, which you can either set to pinpoint your current location or choose to display any place in the world, you can see where Fotopedia’s notable sites are and choose which to learn more about. Once you find a place to delve deeper into, you are taken to a picture slideshow which you can easily scroll through and utilize a simple tap to eliminate the clutter of the surrounding options (for optimal picture viewing). If the place intrigues you, all you need to do is press the information button for further details on the desired destination. You are then presented with descriptions from UNESCO’s World Heritage site as well as the Wikipedia synopsis we know and love.
However, the Fotopedia Heritage adventure does not stop there. The app also links you to Trip Advisor in case you wish to plan a vacation to your selected spot or write a review about it, enables easy access of UNESCO’s Fotopedia Heritage website, and allows you to share your interesting findings with all of your Facebook, Twitter, and email contacts.
Finally, the app also includes the small, key details that make it so well-rounded and easy-to-use. For instance, you can elect favorites so that you can easily revisit them. Another interesting feature is the scrollbar at the bottom, which allows you to see some sites near or related to the one you are checking out. You can also tap the small copyright button to see who the photographer was and read his or her biography and see other photographs he or she has taken.
Fotopedia Heritage is a great way to glimpse the world without having to leave the comfort of your home or pick up mounds of heavy books. While the app did have minor issues, like slow loading time for the links to UNESCO’s webpages, I found it to be a very comprehensive app with great functionality. I think it would be great to integrate something like this with apps like Foursquare or even enable Fotopedia Heritage users to upload their own pictures they have taken of the various featured places. Fotopedia Heritage is for any person who loves to travel, embrace the earth’s intricacies, or simply enjoy stunning pictures and scintillating information. Thanks to UNESCO, with this app, you can place the world in your hands.

If you ever thought about touring Havana and need a guide – this app is perfect.
Just to let you know, this app can’t be downloaded in Cuba because of all that bs U.S.-Cuba politics. It won’t work anyway but if you try, you will probably find yourself locked in one of Castro bros’ places…
So get this app BEFORE you get to Cuba.Enough of the warning, let’s get started on the review.
As you know, Havana is that romantic city yet forbidden and communist. There are these tourist designated areas and those forbidden zones. Who knows what happens when you accidentally stumble into one of those zones.
The app Havana Good Time is created by Conner Gorry, a travel writer, an essayist, and an journalist, and she knows just about everything that has to do with living in Cuba. Whether it’s an 8 hours-black out, aguardiente, wild camping, 5 cent ciguars, Cuban funerals, or disaster preparation.
With this guide written by a professional, you can find with accuracy the hottest venues, museums, hotels, bars and other fun things to do in Havana. Numerous restaurants reviews are also available, and they are all places the author dined at herself.
Worried about language, local custom? No problem, Havana Good Time also provides you with local and practical information and tips, including how to do and get a lot of the stuff without paying a cent(oh wait, isn’t it supposed be like that in a Communist country?).
Last but not the least – updates are free for life.
If you are a traveler and are going to Cuba, there’s no need to buy a guide book because this app is the best one there is.
The first picture is appropriately Che Guevara – The revolution still lives!

The trend of physics-inspired iPhone games continues with Bumps. This cute game requires the player to strategically place a tiny, round bump character so that when it is put into play, it will hit all of the keys, releasing them to unlock the chests holding back the other captured bumps. Not only is this game family-friendly with its adorable graphics and simple conceptual premise, but it also functions without flaw. Furthermore, it can endlessly entertain people of all ages for hours, as each level is more challenging than the next. The only sad thing is that there are a finite number of levels to bump through, but it is certainly bound to be a while before you have to bid farewell to Bumps. With the colorful game of Bumps, your brain and your heart are both sure to smile.

Brawls are one way to settle disputes over physical power and strength, but they invariably end up in pain and injury, even if the fight was all in good humor. Well, now there’s an equally entertaining way to determine who packs the most punch. iPub Boxing allows you to turn your iPhone into a device that measures your arm swing and reach so that you know exactly how strong your punch is. The app can be enjoyed anywhere at any time, and proves to be a great bar game, friendly competition, or ego-boosting mechanism. The best part is, while you get all the fun of finding out who actually has physical prowess, you don’t risk repercussions for unruly conduct. The only possible bruises that can be inflicted are to one’s ego, which is especially great when certain people need a dose of reality. iPub Boxing turns any venue into a boxing arena and reveals just who’s boss.

While many barcode readers exist for the iPhone, Barcode Hero adds the element of social networking to your scans. With Barcode Hero, not only can you do typical barcode related activities like comparing prices and getting related product suggestions, but you can also follow friends and see what they’re scanning and what they recommend. Furthermore, the app has Facebook integration so your shopping activity can be blasted on your profile, and it builds your badge collection, as you can receive badges, points, and special statuses for buying items. Barcode Hero also enables its users to create and send wish lists, making gift giving (and receiving) a much easier process. With Barcode Hero, shopping with friends is even easier, and your scans present a whole new realm of social possibility.

Juggle! is a game with a retro feel and a modern flair. You use your paddle to keep the falling squares in play, racking up points as you go along, with the ultimate objective of garnering as many points as possible. You start by only keeping one square in motion, but as the game progresses, more squares fall, and each square in play slowly shrinks, presenting even more of a challenge — but the higher the difficulty, the more points you get! The second the last square falls past your paddle and into the unknown abyss, your game is over. Even though there are options for timed games (3 and 5 minutes) in addition to an unlimited time play, it is very easy to drop the juggle and lose the game before the time is up. And though the game is great in and of itself, the graphics are very reminiscent of video games from the 1980s (but, of course, with operations clearly from 2010, including Feint capabilities), creating a welcomed sense of nostalgia as you struggle to juggle. If for nothing else than a trip down memory lane, Juggle! is a game you should really get your hands on.
